Meddy & Jonathan's Story
"Two athletes. One experiment. One powerful lesson in metabolic flexibility."
Meddy and Jonathan were colleagues of mine during the commissioning of the Taishan EPR nuclear power plant in China. Both were already highly athletic, training almost every day, so we were able to start with a high-performance programme from day one.
Although both were relatively lean, I wanted to improve their metabolic flexibility rather than simply reduce body fat.
We introduced a short period of very low-carbohydrate nutrition to allow their bodies to rely more efficiently on fat as a fuel source. At the same time, I conducted a simple experiment.
Both athletes removed carbohydrates from their diet on the same day and continued training together.
The only difference?
Jonathan supplemented with exogenous ketones. Meddy did not.
The difference was immediate.
Jonathan experienced virtually no drop in energy during the transition and trained as if nothing had changed. The exogenous ketones provided an immediate alternative fuel source while his metabolism adapted.
Meddy's experience was very different.
Coming from a much higher carbohydrate intake, his energy levels dropped significantly, and he struggled to complete his workout. However, once his body increased its own ketone production, his energy quickly returned and he adapted successfully to the new nutritional strategy.
Despite taking different paths to get there, both athletes achieved outstanding results.
Their transformations included:
- Visible six-pack abs with a deep linea alba
- Reduced body fat
- Increased lean muscle mass
- Improved strength
- Enhanced metabolic flexibility
One of the biggest lessons from this experience was that two athletes following the same nutrition plan can experience very different transitions depending on their metabolic health and previous dietary habits.
