Nathan's Story

"Sometimes the fastest way forward is to stop training."

Nathan and I worked together at the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in China. Before moving there, he had struggled with obesity. The change in lifestyle, climate and diet helped him lose a significant amount of weight, which motivated him to become even more active.

By the time he came to Peak Human Performance, he had already transformed himself from 94 kg down to 54 kg.

On paper, it looked like an incredible success.

But during my assessment, I saw a different picture.

Nathan wasn't just lean.

He had pushed his body into a prolonged state of under-recovery.

He was exercising every single dayβ€”playing 2.5 hours of badminton five days a week and cycling 120 km every Saturday. Despite all that activity, he presented with poor strength, muscular imbalances, joint hypermobility in his shoulders and elbows, and inadequate sleep.

Before we discussed training, I gave him one condition.

We would not start training until he had rebuilt his recovery.

He wasn't happy.

He even challenged me, saying:

"I'm paying you to coach me, not to send me home from the gym."

My answer was simple.

"If you want exceptional results, you have to build them on a solid foundation. First, you need to learn how to sleep again."

It was a difficult message to accept.

For the first two weeks, Nathan did no structured training at all. Instead, we focused entirely on improving his sleep, recovery and overall readiness to train.

Only once those foundations were in place did we begin a structured strength programme.

Over the following 24 weeks, our focus shifted toward building strength, correcting structural imbalances and increasing lean muscle mass.

The transformation was remarkable.

Nathan:

  • Increased his body weight from 54 kg to 67 kg
  • Built approximately 13 kg of lean body mass
  • Remained exceptionally lean throughout the process
  • Developed a stronger, more balanced and resilient body

The biggest challenge wasn't physical.

Having previously been obese, Nathan was terrified of gaining weight, worrying it meant he was becoming unhealthy again.

Instead, he discovered that the scale doesn't tell the whole story.

By building muscle instead of fat, he became healthier, stronger and far more athletic than ever before.

At Peak Human Performance, we don't just ask what your goal isβ€”we identify what's preventing you from achieving it. Sometimes the answer isn't more training. It's building the foundations that allow your body to respond to training in the first place.
